[CIVIL WAR]. Officer's sash worn by Lieutenant John Moore, 83rd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, WIA at Fredericksburg. Ex Julian Converse Collection.

Approx. 8 ft. 6 in. x 3 1/8 in. crimson sash (spots of fading throughout, with several small holes/pulls to sash body). Length includes acorns and tassels.

Provenance: Julian Converse (manuscript ledger sheet and original letter of purchase dated November 1959). 

Manuscript letter from Julian Converse, dated 17 November 1959 records the enclosure of his check for the sash and requests further information about its original owner. Albert D. Freeman writes on the same leaf in reply to Converse two days later: "Your check received and enclosed find sas which was worn by Lieut. John Moore of the 83rd N.Y.V. of infantry, which I believe was a NY city Reg. He moved to city area and died in 1905 and is buried in a cemetery not far from this village..."

Converse manuscript ledger also records his purchase of the sash from Freeman of Richfield Springs, NY in 1959. 

John D. Moore enlisted as a private on 27 May 1861, mustering into Company A of the 83rd New York Infantry Regiment that same day. He was wounded at Fredericksburg in December of the following year, and was promoted to corporal (date not listed in HDS), to sergeant on 1 January 1863, and ultimately to 2nd lieutenant on 21 October 1863.
